Breast Cancer Stages
Breast Cancer Staging describes the location, growth and spread of cancer. It indicates the outcome that can be expected from treatment. Doctors use the TNM System to determine the stage of Breast Cancer. TNM stands for Tumor, Nodes, Metastasized.
As per TNM system, Breast Cancer has following stages:
Stage 0: At this stage, the cancer has developed in the ducts of breast tissue and it has not spread to any surrounding tissues. This is known as noninvasive cancer.
Stage 1A: At this stage, Cancer tumor is small, invasive but not yet spread to the lymph nodes.
Stage 1B: At this stage, the tumor is spread to lymph nodes with the size larger than 0.2 mm and less than 2 mm. At this stage, either there is no detectable breast tumour or it is <20 mm.
Stage 2A: At this stage one of the following situations is true:
The tumor in the breast is not evident, but it has spread to 1 to 3 axillary lymph nodes. Tumor has not spread to distant areas of the body. or
The cancer tumor is = or < 20 mm and it has spread to the axillary lymph nodes. or
The tumor is >20 mm but <50 mm and it has not spread to the axillary lymph nodes.
Stage 2B: At this stage one of the following situations is true:
The tumor is >20 mm <50 mm and it has spread to 1 to 3 axillary lymph nodes. or
The tumor is >50 mm but it has not spread to the axillary lymph nodes.
Stage 3A: At this stage, cancer of any size has spread anywhere between 4 to 9 axillary lymph nodes or to internal mammary lymph nodes. It has not spread to other body parts. or
If a tumor is >50 mm and it has spread to 1 to 3 axillary lymph nodes.
Stage 3B: At this stage, one of the following conditions is true:
Tumor has spread to the chest wall or
Tumor is causing swelling or ulceration of the breast or
Tumor is diagnosed as inflammatory breast cancer.
Stage 3C: Tumor has spread to 10+ lymph nodes.
Stage 4: At this stage, Cancer has spread to other organs of the body. This stage is also know as Metastatic Cancer.
Breast Cancer Treatment
Treatment for Breast Cancer Depends on 3 Major Factors, Tumor, Nodes & Metastasis. This is also called as TNM staging of Breast Cancer.
Depending on inferences of TNM Staging, Breast Cancer treatment is done with a combination of treatment that includes:
- Surgery
- Radiation Therapy
- Chemotherapy
- Hormonal Therapy
- Targeted Therapy
- Psychological Support
